Abilities
Mutation: Magneto’s ability lies in the control, generation and understanding of magnetic fields and energies.
He can control any form of ferrous materiel, both large and small, moving materials smaller than a blood cell or many tons. The fields surrounding him have been registered at 200 tesla, with no upper limit discovered. He is also capable of generating a certain amount of electrical energy via magnetic induction and also create limited diamagnetic effects (this allows him to ‘fly’ by manipulating magnetic attraction and repulsion). He can accelerate ferrous materials with great speed and force, turning ball bearings to bullets and cars to missiles, or generate shields that freeze bullets in mid-air. The normal levels of iron in a living body are too small and diffuse for him to manipulate directly but that balance is a fine one – a little more iron and he is able to make use of it.
Magneto is highly attuned to the Earth’s electromagnetic fields, able to ‘sense’ them – he often describes it as a tactile sense -and manipulate them on a global scale. He is also able to sense human electromagnetic signatures, though he cannot recognize individuals with it. When using his powers at their higher levels he occasionally creates flashes of light or heat but he cannot do that intentionally.
Magneto’s ability to generate magnetic fields is quite limited (say one car instead of an entire bridge), the effects he is famous for are done by manipulating the existing fields that envelop the earth and everything on it, around it, or anywhere within thousands of kilometers in space.
Beyond this amazing ability, Eric has no other mutations, he is a normal human of average physical strength, speed and endurance. He is not immune to telepathic or psychic manipulations however his strength of will is so strong that many such attacks – if they are attempting to sway him from an important course of action – face unexpectedly powerful resistance. In addition, he has his ‘bucket’; the close fitting purple helmet that he created to defend against telepathic and psychic attacks (originally designed with Charles in mind but is resistant to all psychic attacks, including things like telekinesis – it cannot be pulled off by TK). Obviously, when not wearing the bucket, it does him no good.
Skills: Eric is a man who’s survived the worst impulses of humanity and triumphed. He’s a man with a powerful intellect, indomitable will and a wide, deep education. Over the years, he’s been a carpenter, a spy, a criminal mastermind, a teacher and a devoted husband and father. He has hunted Nazis, and planned wars. His first ‘job’ was as a sonnercommando, stripping the corpses of his fellow prisoners of anything of value.
(At his age, most of his skills are mental and emotional, rather than physical – though he was a skilled fighter in his youth – due to previous player’s anti-aging serum, this is no longer accurate) He’s excellent at assessing others’ strengths and weakness, and taking advantage of them. He can inspire loyalty, devotion – and terror - and is an accomplished leader. He’s a licensed engineer (in Israel, under a false identity), with a scattering of other degrees and a talented geneticist. Along with Charles Xavier, he built Cerebro (and modified a copy to make it a killing machine) and later a machine to induce mutations in non-X-gene humans; he’s an accomplished inventor and engineer – particularly regarding the way mutations and technology interact.
Magneto has been planning the coming war against humanity for decades and is a master tactician, strategist and ruthless plotter. All in all, there are few still living who can match his intelligence, drive and will.
Magneto is one of the most wanted criminals in the world and, post his arrest, his fingerprints, image and DNA are all on file with various law agencies.
Personality: Eric’s personality can be summed up with words like indomitable, stubborn, driven, brilliant, noble and probably megalomaniac, ruthless and (occasionally) brutal. His personality was deeply shaped by his childhood internment in Auschwitz and the horrible things he witnessed there. The Nazis taught Magneto just what humanity would do to ‘others’, given the chance and he has never forgotten that lesson. Never again, he has vowed. Never again.
Magneto may be an image of fear and hatred for the general (human) public but for many mutants, he is a symbol of strength and hope. While he has little regard for non-mutant humans (though he occasionally wavers in this view, particularly after spending too much time with Charles), he can form genuine friendships, mutual respect and affection with fellow mutants. He’s charismatic, attracting those who seek order, stability and direction in their lives. He’s also got a ruthless streak that he applies to everyone – even himself – for nothing, absolutely nothing, is more important to him than securing the place of mutants as the next dominant species on Earth. Magneto is willing to commit genocide in order to ensure the survival of mutant-kind.
On a personal level, Eric has outlived most of his friends, lovers and family. It’s left him isolated and rather reserved; he defends himself emotionally with irony and hides any weaker feelings from all but his closest confidants (none of whom are alive, after Charles’ death). He regrets many of the choices he’s made in his life, and the way it’s made enemies of friends and family but would not sacrifice his goals to undo that damage.
History: Born a Polish Jew, Eric’s early childhood is his secret to keep. He and his parents were rounded up by the Nazis when Poland was conquered and sent to Auschwitz. His parents were killed almost immediately and, in a failed attempt to save them, his powers first manifested. The strange warping of the wires and fences that led to the gas chambers ended when the guards clubbed young Eric on the head. By the time he woke, his parents were ashes in the wind and he bore a fresh tattoo on his arm.
He spent several years in Auschwitz, clinging to survival by working as a sonnerkomando and doing his best to help the other prisoners. Starving, brutalized, and suffering under various aliments, Eric clung stubbornly to life. He met a young gypsy girl there and they developed a close friendship. When the Allied forces approached Auschwitz, the Nazi guards began a wholesale slaughter of the prisoners, hoping to somehow hide their crimes. When Magda was threatened he grabbed a bit of lumber and killed the man. The two fled the camp, hours ahead of Allied rescue, and made their way across Europe.
As they traveled the two youngsters fell in love. When Magda became pregnant, Eric found an employer willing to hire him as a carpenter and young couple rented a tiny apartment and began what they both hoped would be a quiet life with their growing family. Unfortunately, greed and fear killed Anya and caused Magda to flee from her lover, horrified when Eric used his powers to kill their attackers. It also re-activated Eric’s mutant power, which had been dormant since its first appearance in Auschwitz. It was the first time Eric consciously used his power to kill, but far from his last.
Over the next few decades, Eric worked as a Nazi hunter, partially funded by the United States. He eventually broke with them (committing another murder) and ended up in Israel, with a stop in Russia during Stalin’s last years. He met a young American there, Charles Xavier, and the two developed a deep, lifelong friendship. They spent hours arguing the nature of morality, the future of the world and the frailty of hope. Eventually, the revealed their secrets to each other. They were mutants. The two joined forces with a plan for creating a safer world for the new species Eric preferred to call ‘homo superior’. They built Cerebro together, and planned the school. For years, Eric permitted Charles’ ethics to guide their joint actions but as the years went on and humanity continued on its murderous course, Eric became disillusioned. The arguments between the two friends became full of anger. Finally, Eric cut ties with Charles, promising that he would not allow compassion and pity to blind him to harsh reality. He would ensure the survival of their kind and strike the blow Charles was too weak to dare.
From then on, Eric – now Magneto – began to gather resources; money, influence and mutants. He used many of the same networks developed with Charles to find young mutants and bring them into his organization. For years, he moved quietly, distributing propaganda, amassing a huge amount of wealth, and plotting. International law enforcement agencies became familiar with his organization but were almost completely unprepared to deal with trained, organized mutants.
Magneto’s first grand attempt at achieving his goals in one fell swoop – and in a way that, to his mind, minimized human casualties – involved a powerful young mutant named Marie. Unfortunately, she’d acquired a protector and Charles Xavier had become aware of her as well. The X-men and The Brotherhood faced off for the first time on the Statue of Liberty. The Brotherhood, opposing fellow mutants for almost the first time, did not fare well and Magneto was captured.
At great cost the state of New York, in association with the Dept. of Homeland Security built a special ‘plastic prison’ for the most powerful and dangerous mutant terrorist in the world. Magneto awaited trial there for quite some time, and fell under the care of General Stryker and his mind-controlling drugs. Unable to control himself Magneto betrayed the school, his old friend, and everything else he believed in.
He escaped, through the aid of his second-in-command, and – knowing what Stryker has planned – arranged to contact the X-men. The two teams of mutants worked together to enter Alkali Lake then split up to attempt various rescue operations. Magneto, as he had hoped, found Xavier first. With Mystique’s aid, he altered the copy of Cerebro and manipulated his old friend into attacking every human on the planet with his mind. Magneto, aware of the shattering dam, made his escape with a new recruit, leaving Charles behind to commit genocide on his behalf. Luckily (for the X-men), Storm was able to reach Charles’ entrapped mind and stop him before too many people were killed. Jean died and the X-men retreated to their mansion and Magneto was free to pursue his plans.
The X-men and The Brotherhood met again, fighting against what Magneto feared would become a new biological weapon of destruction. He gained temporary control over a transformed Jean Gray, using her powers to attack Worthington labs but, in the end his organization was defeated and he, himself, is stripped of his powers. Reduced to human frailty, Eric waited for death or transformation.
Playing chess, in Central Park, he discovers – in the trembling of a pawn – hope.
The Cure, he hoped, was temporary. Eric took refuge in an alternate identity in a ‘rest home’ while he struggled to regain his strength and powers. Two of his Brotherhood attempted a rescue, and Eric returned to his mountain base. Shortly thereafter, other members of the Brotherhood began to trickle back. Magneto began to rebuild his army, preparing for future threats. He also engaged the services of a geneticist, Dr. Turner, and between the two of them they came up with a cure for the Cure – and a way to reverse the aging process for x-gene mutants.
Magneto distributed the cure to his troops and sent them to Genosha while went to DC to spy on the political atmosphere there. Turner sought a test subject for his anti-aging regimen. In Washington, Magneto found the X-men under attack by government troops and Sentinels. He and the X-men cooperated, Magneto rescued his daughter from Omega Red and he destroyed the Sentinels. The brief period of cooperation, as usual, didn’t last and Magneto held the X-men hostage, threatening to crush their jet if they didn’t give him the information he was seeking. They refused.
Dr. Turner completed his work on the anti-aging serum and Magneto took it, regaining youth and strength.
In the midst of re-building the Brotherhood as a stronger, more organized group with the help of his old friend Exodus, the Decimation struck. Along with the X-men, Magneto and the Brotherhood worked to save those mutants they could and discover a cure for the plague – and fight the humans who were using disease as an excuse to commit more acts of genocide. As always, as soon as the immediate crisis was averted, the X-men and the Brotherhood’s alliance shattered. Now, Magneto and his people have withdrawn to lick their wounds and bury their dead – including Exodus.
Sample Post: The equipment was necessary and the Royal Air Force base far too well defended for its own good. Those two facts earned research base Huggins Magneto's personal attention. With Toad at his side, Magneto stood amid a cluster of juniper and waited.
"Why couldn't I be on the point team?" Toad complained, shifting restlessly as he crouched in the scrubby grass.
"Your turn is coming, soon enough, my friend." Magneto said absently. His gaze was fixed on the distant base while an earpiece hissed softly in his ear. He was waiting for Mystique's signal. It was nothing more than a double click in the static but as soon as he heard it, Magneto lifted a hand. Cyclone fencing beneath their feet creaked softly, then lifted from the ground. Balanced delicately on a swell of magnetic force, as obvious to Magneto as a wave was to a sailor, they soared in silence through the night, above the searchlights, and came to a landing somewhere in the motor pool. Mystique had already handled the radar equipment and - Magneto glanced towards the security shack where a sheen of blood spilled like black oil across the entryway - Sabertooth had taken care of the perimeter guards.
"You'll have twenty-five minutes before shift change." Mystique said, rough voiced. She picked up a dropped pistol and turned to the shack, a duplicate of the corpse she kicked aside as she pulled the door shut.
"Come along," Magneto said, stepping off his personal magic carpet and heading towards one of several innocuous looking buildings. Toad scuttled behind him as Sabertooth, reeking of blood, fell in beside.
The door was locked and Magneto allowed Toad to manage it, instead he watched the darkness, eyes hooded and arms crossed under the fall of his cloak. Sabertooth sprang inside before the door was half open and, though Magneto heard no sound, the smell of blood drifted out shortly thereafter.
Both Sabertooth and Toad could see in the dark and Magneto needed no light at all – he was long accustomed to reading the eddies and shifts in magnetic fields so the trio moved deeper into the disguised research station in near total darkness, Toad dealt with the various electronic guardians while Sabertooth took care of flesh and blood. Magneto had little to do except mark the passing minutes. Only at the end, did they come to a halt.
A featureless wall of gleaming metal, the ultimate immovable object, blocked the end of the short hallway deep inside Huggins’ base. It was a ceramic/metallic alloy that even Magneto could not simply rip apart, locked tight with the ultimate in security technology available. Unfortunately, the entire system hinged on one powerful natural force; magnetism. The time release locks were powerful electromagnets, impossible to shift with anything less than a major explosion and the multi-million dollar safe was touted as impossible to defeat.
Magneto smiled and lifted a hand.
