Abilities
Mutation:
Pete is a mutant with the superhuman ability to convert the tissue of his entire body into an organic steel-like substance, granting him superhuman strength and a high degree of resistance to bodily harm. This substance resembling steel is of unknown composition but appears to be analogous to osmium and to carbon steel. He is able to transform into this armor-like state at will (the process is virtually instantaneous) and remain in that form for an as yet undetermined amount of time. (The longest time he has remained in armored form by choice so far has been five days). Once in his armored form he remains so until he consciously wills himself back to normal. If he is rendered unconscious, however, he spontaneously reverts to his normal form.
While in the armored state, Pete possesses the same degree of mobility that he does in his normal form. He does, however, gain the superhuman durability, stamina, and strength.
In his normal state, Pete possesses no enhanced abilities whatsoever and is vulnerable to the normal things.
Skills:
Pete is a very skilled artist with hopes of becoming a professional artist one day. While most of his work up to now has been done in pencil, he has recently branched out to photography as well.
He is also a knowledgeable farmer with years of experience working on a wheat and corn farm. He knows about farming mechanics, soil and nutritional chemistry, weather and saturation measurements, crop cycles and growth rates, and crop sales and pricing.
Pete’s first language is Russian and until he came to the Xavier Institute, he spoke very little English. While he has studied hard and speaks English quiet well now, he often struggles with the language and still reverts to Russian if he has to express something complex or if he is emotional or stressed.
Personality:
Despite the hardened and battle ready exterior that he puts forth in the battle room, Pete is actually a very soft and gentle soul, more interested in artistic pursuits then in physical endeavors. He lacks the machismo and bravado of his male team mates, and generally prefers more quiet, peaceful activities such as drawing, reading, gardening, and studying. A fact that has often led to teasing by his fellow classmates, teasing that is usual misunderstood by the serious boy.
Often called the “gentle giant” by his peers, he has a soft spoken and thoughtful nature that is often mistaken as shyness or lack of intelligence. These accusation is often heightened by the fact that Pete is a stoic and quiet young man who is usually slow to speak up or share his thoughts with others, and by the fact that he lacks confidence in his English language abilities and often fears being teased about his accent and grammar.
As a farmer, Pete nurtured traits of perseverance and dedication, showing a single minded dedication to seeing a task through and proving that he wouldn’t shirk any needed task no matter how difficult, time consuming, or dirty it might be. These same traits have proven to make him a formidable opponent on the battlefield. Although his personality and attitude are not particularly suited to the life of a soldier, he is a loyal and determined follower of the Xavier dream and willing to do whatever it takes to see that dream become a reality. A fierce fighter when he feels his ideals or morals or challenged or in need of defending, he has proven time and time again to be a formidable opponent.
History:
Life, for Piotr Rasputin, began and ended on a farm near Lake Baikal in Siberia. He was the middle child, the steady and dependable. Unlike his older brother, his loved the farm and the simple life his parents lived. Unlike his baby sister, his had the serious, focus needed to make that farm successful. So while Mikhail schemed ways to escape and Illyana lived in her books and dreams, Piotr worked.
He’d been born for this work. His mutant power, present since his 13th birthday when he’d transformed into a metal giant and wrestled the fallen tractor off his neighbor’s legs, only proved how suited for this work he was. No one was bothered by his ability, or the added edge it gave him on the farm. He was a kind and generous boy, always willing to lend a hand to help another or take on a task, and he quickly became a source of pride for the local town. Their very own Man of Steel, the Siberian Superman.
He was supposed to live his whole life on the farm he was born on; to marry that sweet, simple Olga he’d loved since they were 5; to raise a houseful of happy, noisy children; to come home every day dirty and tired from a job well done and a family well cared for. And he probably would have lived his life like that, if not for bad luck.
When Piotr was 16, his parents were killed in a fire. He’d been having dinner with his girlfriend’s family, a few miles away, and by the time he’d reached the smoking, charred building, there was nothing left of his parents, his home, his farm, his crops, or his life. The only thing that survived on the farm was Illyana, his little sister, who had teleported into the neighbor’s yard with her own newly emerged mutant power.
Without that season’s crops, the bank quickly repossessed the farm and left the two homeless as well as orphans. Their brother Mikhail, now an officer in the Russian Army whose dreams did not include the added burden of his slow, dull brother and flighty, silly sister, offered a solution. There was a school, in America, that took in mutants. There was a scholarship.
Piotr went, having no other choice, planning to return in a year or two to take up his old plans. But as he adjusted to life in America, Siberia adjusted to life without him. Younger, new mutants sprang up to take his place; his girlfriend married someone else; another family moved into his farm. And before he knew it, his home wasn’t his anymore. He had to start a new life, find a new dream.
Now called Pete instead of Piotr, and Colossus instead of the Siberian Superman, he adjusted. He made a few friends, found a new job to apply himself too, and discovered his sketching hobby had bloomed into a possible new profession. The Institute has shown him that life has more to offer then it did in the steppes of Siberia, and that there are more dreams to follow then the ones of a happy family.
Pete became an dedicated follower of Xavier’s, finding a sense of idealism and moral structure in the headmasters dreams and vision that strongly aligned with his own. He wanted to join the X-men and help Xavier to make that dream a reality, but being both young and quiet meant that he was always over looked in favor of the louder and flasher students.
He was finally given an opportunity to shine during the attack by Stryker on the house. Alerted to the invasion of the soldiers by Syrien’s creams, Pete was played an instrumental role in rescuing both her and the other students. He managed to lead the students out of the house to safety, and watched over them like a giant mother hen during the time it took the X-men to stop Stryker and reopen the school.
With the school reopened and classes restarted, Pete found himself with a coveted position on the Junior X-men team and the added attention of the X-men and power trainers. He was proud of his position and proud of the faith that Xavier had shown in him by giving him the position, and he tried harder then anyone to prove that it was well founded.
Pete was hit hard by the death of Xavier, although he would hide it from everyone except his sister. The headmaster had come to replace the father that Pete had lost only a short time before, and his passing reopened the old wounds. Pete threw himself into the Junior X-men team and his work, and was quick to volunteer to go to San Francisco where he hoped not to get revenge on Xavier’s killer, but to find some sense of peace and order by fighting for the dreams Xavier had left behind.
The death and mayhem caused in the battle didn’t give him any sense of peace and order, and left him feeling only more confused and sadden by the reckless destruction and damage caused and all the lives lost. Although he would continue to train with the junior X-men team and do his best to see the Xavier dream through, he would pull away a little and throw himself into his other work.
He would play almost no role in the events of Decimation, choosing instead to stay at the school and try to provide some structure and safety for the scared children left behind, the way he had during the Stryker invasion. His success there has given him a well needed confidence both and restored some of his faith in the Xavier dream, and he has shown a renewed interest in his work on the junior X-men team.
Right now Pete is completing his last year of high school, graduating a year later then most of his classmates because of the added time it took him to master English on arriving in New York. He is still working on the junior X-men team, and hoping to move up to the X-men team once he graduates. In his free time, he continues to work with the younger children at the school, serving as the teaching assistant for the K-8 grades, where he helps out with both the art and PE classes.
Sample Post:
“Don’t do that snowflake.” The camera was solid and heavy in his hand, curving nicely against his palm. The raised buttons moved easily under his thick fingers, adjusting and snapping into focus. It was the new, chosen not for the expensive name or fancy features, but because it had been the only camera large enough for him to feel comfortable using.
“Don’t do what?” Illyana stared into the camera as she spoke, watching him fiddle with the buttons and levers and the decorated and side and back. She was sitting on the garden swing, the place that usually make her look so graceful and effortless, but now she just sat there, heavy and motionless in the swing, staring at the camera.
“Look at the camera.” He said, adjusting the focus. “Just act like yourself.”
“Who was I acting like?” Illyana continued to stare at the camera, her face slack and expressionless as a toy doll. Then suddenly and without warning, she pulled a strange and distorted face at him, stretching out her eyes and twisting her mouth around, her nose scrunched and her tongue out.
Pete took the picture. The camera snapped and the light flashed. Illyana burst out laughing, and her took another picture. It wasn’t light and effortless, but it was better then staring.
