Mutation: Electrical absorption - Surge is constantly absorbing electricity from her surroundings. Be it the static charge in the air, or from the TV, she is constantly taking it in. She retains this electricity inside her body, and is able to expel it at will in two forms.
Electrical discharge - Surge can use the electricity stored in her body and send it out as lightning blasts. Although currently, it’s probably not strong enough to kill a healthy person, it will do some definite damage. There is a limit to how much energy she can throw out at one time, usually regulated by her gauntlets.
Super speed - Another way for Surge to discharge the electricity is by channeling it into super speed. Although it has never been tested exactly HOW fast she can run, it is without a doubt, faster than the average person. Presumably, somebody with true super speed powers would be able to outrun her, but otherwise, she makes a formidable sprinter.
As stated before, Surge is constantly absorbing electricity. There is no way for her to control, or stop this, and without the metal gauntlets, the absorption would be far too much for her body to handle. When she starts to absorb too much, it causes her to speak quickly, leaves her unable to focus her thoughts and greatly worsens her control over the blasts.
Skills: Noriko might not even know it herself, but she can be an intimidating leader. She has a natural sense of right and wrong, and though the main part of her personality might be brooding, she does have a very kind heart. This leads her to be an excellent speaker when need be, and her wisdom allows her to make quick decisions, and rather impressive strategies.
She is flexible and speedy, if not the strongest member of the team. However, what Noriko lacks in strength and raw ability, she makes up for in guts and wit. Indeed, Noriko can prove to be extremely brave; sometimes even unflinching in the most dire of situations.
Also, she has some knowledge in technology and three forms of martial arts: Judo, Bushido, and Jujitsu.
Personality: Upon first glance, Noriko Ashida is what most would label as your every day 'rebel.' Her personality matches her powers, as she shocks most people with her eccentric looks and tastes; even more so with her biting sarcasm and brooding demeanor. Nori certainly has a bit of an edge, and can easily be termed as brooding and bitchy, though she has a twisted sense of humor that allows her to find something funny even in the most ironic situations.
An independent, hardened girl, Noriko has no peace of mind, which enables her to be restless, paranoid, and edgy; intimidating especially. As hard as she may seem, Noriko has a soft heart, but a steel spine. It takes hell AND high water before she even thinks about giving up, and due to her untrusting nature, she rarely lets anyone get close, though she most certainly wants to, deep down. In fact, Noriko can be a rather pleasant, maybe even loving in the right company.
She is still a kid at heart, and it is more often that she is found in the company of younger children than her own age or older; simply because she doesn't like to be judged. Ironically, despite Noriko's major sense of self and individualism, she also feels the need to be accepted. But her pride won't let her give in too easily, or convert, which usually means anyone she actually does like, might never know it. Especially since she has a bad habit of teasing people she can stand, and ignoring or flat out frying those she can't. Noriko has a temper, and because of that, and her distrust and pride, she can easily become her own worst enemy. She believes in love, but doesn't waste her time day dreaming about romance. She's always been a tom boy; and while she can feel romantic feelings, she doesn't really believe anything like that could ever last.
History: Noriko Ashida was born in the most famous, prestigious, and lively city in Japan. Noriko led a good childhood, living under her family's customs and traditions. Her childhood was full of life and festivities, and she was blessed with the unconditional affection of her parents, and her brother dearest, Keitaro. Keitaro and Noriko always had a close relationship; they did almost everything together, and dealt with everything together as well. Noriko went to a traditional private school when she was young and learned about Japan's fascinating history and all the customs and legends that it held. Up until that point, she had been taught enough in its culture, but had been better versed in the ways of the English from her mother.
Several days after her thirteenth birthday, while she was at home doing the dishes, she had her very first electrical discharge outbreak, which caused just about all the power in their home to go out. This event came as a big shock to Noriko as she didn’t know much on the mutant subject, and she didn't even know any mutants who could explain what had happened. Noriko was now cursed with this so called gift, and eventually, it caused her to drop out of school in order to maintain a small piece of her reputation. Her father took the "Awful" news hard, and confronted his daughter about her powers. He did not approve of mutants in his household; he was against her having these powers but there was nothing he could do about it. His affection for his daughter soon melted away, and he slowly started to ignore her existence, simply saying that she brought disgrace and shame to her family.
Crushed by her father's words, Noriko fled her home, and eventually, the country despite her brother’s wishes that she stay. Noriko simply couldn't bear the fact that her own father resented her because of her powers. Days, weeks, months and years went by quickly as Noriko sought refuge in North America, specifically New York City. There, Noriko grew to know the streets very well, and ended up turning into a lighter version of a street punk. Her personality became a bit colder and reluctant and over the past few years, she has become a fighter, and a survivor.
Ever since she ran away from home, she lost contact with her family, and thought that it was best that way. She was a burden when she ran away and she didn't want to ever be a burden to them again. Exactly four years has past since she ran away from her household, and ever since, she has been homeless and simply living on the streets. One day, she managed to hear about the Xavier Institute, which specialized in mutants, like Noriko. With those rumors she did a bit of detective work, finding out the location and any information that she could about the place. Armed with what she found, she walked up to the X-Mansion gates.
It was the mutant Beast who found out about Noriko's powers and the flaws in them. Despite that, he saw potential in the young adult, so he coerced her into joining the X-Men. With this opportunity, Noriko more than gladly accepted, and thus embarked on a new adventure in her life. Beast was then the one to create the specially designed gauntlets for Noriko's excessive electrical absorption problem. Since then, she has adapted to wearing gauntlets on her hands at all times, and trained hard to learn how to manipulate her powers more adeptly. Since then, Noriko has led a rather peaceful existence.
Sample Post:
The music shot through the otherwise silent mansion. It was late, Noriko knew this. But it was also Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back. Hellooo trump card. Although she did edge down the volume just a little bit. All day...she had spend all day watching Star Wars. And now she was almost near the end. But this one was like, her favourite, so it was okay. Wearing green flannel pajama pants and a matching top, and wrapped snugly in a warm blanket, Nori was set.
She kept her eyes fixed on the TV screen across from her, shoveling some popcorn into her mouth. Other people had come and gone during the day, a gaggle of girls showing up for Episode 3 (Hey, Anakin was hot, she couldn't blame them) and a few more coming and going. Nobody had stayed for the entire thing. But now it was late at night, and she was all alone. And that kind of sucked, really. Movie watching was always better with somebody else with you.
But whatever. Battle of Hoth was still kick ass, Han and Leia were STILL OTP, and by God, Darth Vader was still a badass mother fucker. God she loved this movie. She needed to find George Lucas and worship him or something. Yes. Most definitely. And while she was at it, she could find Hayden Christiansen and do a whole other form of worshipping. Holy crap, was she being lustful? Noriko Ashida was NOT lustful! She merely admired and occasionally oggled. Blah, it was only over a person she never had a chance with, so it was no big deal. But the fact that Nori possessed a sex drive was a bit unnerving; she was a feminist, damn it. Girl power all the way. Girl's ruled, boys drooled. Simple as that. But she really should have learned her lesson by now; nothing was ever simple anymore, was it? Not really.
Not that Noriko was a particularly complex person. She had two sides; not necessarily making her two faced. But there was Nori, Nori, then there was Nori lighting your ass up. Most people, no matter how dim, could tell the difference. She was easy to get along with, or so she reasoned with herself. She just treated others as they treated her; and in the case of people like Julian Keller, well, that just didn't go too well. People like Julian, Kitty Pryde, Bobby Drake.. they over shadowed her. They were smart, popular, powerful, gorgeous. Not that she was jealous or anything.
Her eyes trained on the screen, the colorful reflection of the action sequences reflecting on her face as her expression faded into something thoughtful, maybe even a bit forlorn. Noriko knew she belonged at Xavier's; it had become her only home. In a weird philosophical way, she knew the Institute had always been her home, and hopefully, always would be. She would be lost without it, and the people there. Well, a handful of people there. As bad as it might sound, she could certainly live without the majority of the human population, just so long as there were people like Storm, Beast, and Logan around. And Pete. Damn. Pete.
She hadn't thought about Colossus in a long time; and hadn't talked to him in an even longer span of time. In fact, she hadn't really talked to him much at all. Yeah, real encouraging. God, people must think she was a complete bitch. The thought made her sigh, her enthusiasm over the Star Wars marathon ebbing; making her snag the remote and shut off the television, darkness filling the room suddenly. Maybe with a little more effort, a little more practice, a little more courage, she could finally let go of her past and open up a bit? It had taken Nori not a week, a month, or even a few months to come to this conclusion. Try a few years. It was odd, what notions people could come up with when they weren't even trying. She just kind of wished she'd have though of that a few years ago, like when she was getting ready for bed or something, and not trying to wind down, watch Star Wars, and forget she was lonely.
