Abilities
Mutation: Hyper-Accelerated Metabolism – Marrow’s mutation is caused by accelerated growth hormones that stimulate her metabolism to increase her strength, agility, reflexes, resistance to impact, and recuperative powers, while allowing her to extend her bones on command and remove them in the form of various weapons including daggers, projectile spears, blowguns, etc.
Accelerated Bone Growth – Marrow has the ability to control the growth of her bone structure. Initially this was uncontrolled, but after training under the watchful eye of her older sister, Callisto, she now has better control to the point that she can actually will away any partitions in order to appear ‘normal’ for short amounts of time, ranging to about three hours. Marrow’s body naturally generates large, bony protrusions which she can pull and wield as weapons, and also act as a form of protection by covering her in the form of body armor. She utilizes this power in many ways, including the creation of knuckle guards, spears, and projectile spikes. Marrow can also form more complex shapes and of a higher quality similar to that of ivory.
Bone Structure Durability – Her skeletal bones seems to be also more durable than normal, she had easily survived heavy hits on several body parts. She can theoretically jump off the Brooklyn Bridge and land without any major damage due to using her bone armor. This however has never been proven.
Healing Factor – Like a feral mutant, Marrow is gifted with a enhanced healing factor. It is this healing factor that allows her to heal from the wounds she gives herself while removing the bones from her body. Her healing factor also grows her bones quickly and regenerates her bones when they need to be replaced. This healing factor may also contribute to the ability for Marrow to generate duel organs, thus causing Marrow to be able to have two hearts in order to compensate for her random bone growth.
Weaknesses: Despite the fact that Marrow’s mutation affords her some amount of resistance to death and gives her an enhanced healing factor which helps her heal at a faster rate then a normal human would, Marrow is not immortal. She can still die via decapitation, loss of limb, etc. Another flaw is that Marrow cannot blend in and look human at all times. She can only manage it for several hours per day, and eventually start to have various bone growth protrude from her body. Lastly Marrow must be careful to not wear herself out since her powers depend on her metabolism. If not careful, she can drain herself and fall unconscious if she uses her powers too much. Her rate so far is of continuous rabid growth that can last up to two hours. Finally, like many mutants whose powers are mainly physical, Marrow does have some weakness to mutants whose power are mental. Telepaths, telekinetics, and empaths can all affect Marrow.
Skills: Proficiency at using blade-shaped bones as throwing weapons or in hand-to-hand combat. Marrow is an expert hand-to-hand combatant, specializing in street fighting. Marrow is also an expert thief, a talent she learned over the years in order to survive living on the streets of New York City. She can speak English and Spanish fluently, although she does have a slight New Jersey accent.
Personality: Tough – When you meet Marrow, the first impression that you get from her is that she has a strong, rough attitude. Sarah isn’t the kind of woman that easily backs down from a fight. Quite the reverse. Instead she’ll rush into any brawl, no matter the consequences or the danger, especially when she is protecting a fellow Morlock. She sees herself as a protector and a warrior, and no amount of common sense will deter her from fighting for the cause.
Short-Tempered – Another aspect that is easy to pick up is Marrow’s surly temper. Quick to anger, in many ways Sarah is like a ticking time bomb waiting to go off. Even the slightest of invectives is enough to get her rushing in, eyes blazing.
Cautious – Sarah will take calculated risks when it comes to dealing with strangers. Bad experiences in the past has taught Sarah to be a careful judge of character, and will only open up with those she trusts. In the end however, most often then not Marrow prefers to play the part of the loner.
Vengeful – Revenge is an art form that Marrow takes pride in being a master. It comes quickly or takes decades. It can be long and excruciatingly painful, or painless and deadly swift. All Morlocks appreciate a well-executed vengeance, even when they themselves are the targets. Sarah is no different. She will do whatever it takes to exact her revenge, sometimes going to tremendous measures that some would consider to be fanatical in the extreme, always preferring the cruelest of methods.
Methodical – Marrow is a very logical and meticulous person. If she sees that there is some way that she can profit in an endeavor she will accept any hardship. To some she may seem that she is a very willing person to put up with uncomfortable situations. It is those kinds of people that do not see her inner maliciousness and hardiness.
Honest – Marrow is not deceitful by nature. Quite the opposite. She in fact is honest to the point of brutality. She will only lie when needed too, or if it helps her situation in any way. If not, then she will answer questions with a curt honesty that may surprise others.
History: The mutant known as Marrow aka Sarah Ramirez was born on April 16, 1986, and grew up in New Jersey to a Latin father and an African American mother. Her mother’s name was Makayla Jackson and her father was named Juan Ramirez. She has an older sister, Casey, who would eventually become known as the mutant Morlock leader Callisto.
Growing up in a small middle class neighborhood in New Jersey, Sarah’s childhood was a quiet if poor one. Her father was a police officer and her mother was a teacher. Even though both of Sarah’s parents worked, it was difficult for them to make ends meat. Although both sisters were bright and did well in school, pressures from home caused both girls to often escape to the streets, where gangs were prevalent. By the time Casey was 8 and Sarah was 6 both were in gangs. In order to help their parents pay the rent the two sisters became thieves, both saying that they got the extra cash from odd jobs, and although they were able to avoid arrest up to their early teens, both girls were eventually caught, where Casey, 14, was sent to juvenile hall while Sarah, 11, was placed on probation.
It was shortly after Casey’s returned form juvenile hall a year later that both girls’ mutations began to surface. While Casey developed her heightened speed and mutant-sensing ability, Sarah began to show signs of abnormal bone growth. At first her parents thought that it was a rare skin condition, but eventually it was made clear that Sarah was a mutant, this causing Casey to also come out. Sarah’s parents were heartbroken. Unable to deal with their parent’s rejection, Sarah and Casey fled to the streets, the two sisters coming to be known as Callisto and Marrow due to their powers.
It was Callisto who discovered the “Alley,” the main tunnel that is connected to a network of tunnels beneath New York City. The tunnels were constructed in the 1950’s by the US government in case of a nuclear war but were later abandoned. Callisto made this her home and found other mutant outcasts willing to join her. Seeing that there was strength in numbers Callisto gathered together a large community of mutants that would eventually come to be known as the Morlocks. The community was organized like a large street gang that was led by Callisto.
Years passed. Most often relaying on one another to survive, the two sisters worked together to learn how to control their powers, Marrow eventually learning how to hide her bone growth for a few hours every day. Callisto in the meantime soon mastered her abilities and would eventually form and lead the police-group of the Morlocks known as the Omegas, Marrow stepping up to become her sister’s second in command. Together the girl’s led the Morlocks, the two working together in order to help the group survive, most often having to resort to stealing and theft in order to find food and supplies.
It was during one of these food runs that Marrow, now 19-years old, was caught and arrested. Sent to the mutant holding facility known as the Vault, it was in prison that Sarah suffered two tragedies. The first was the when Sarah learned that her parents had been murdered by the Mafia. The next blow when Sarah learned of the death of her sister, Callisto, who had taken part in the battle at Alcatraz.
Marrow, enraged and heartbroken, promised to have vengeance for her sister’s death, blaming the humans that had been at the battle, not knowing that her sister had fallen at a fellow mutant’s hands. Determined, Marrow waited for the day of her release, intent of achieving only one goal; becoming the leader of the Morlocks and avenging her sister’s death. Now 21, and pending release, that day had finally come. Released shortly after the end of the Decimation revolt in District X, Marrow returned to the Morlocks, and after a series of combat challenges, Marrow quickly rose through the ranks of the Morlocks, eventually assuming command. Now as a powerful a leader as her sister, Marrow now hopes to establish a treaty with the only group she sees worthy of her trust. The Brotherhood.
