Abilities
Mutation: As her codename implies, Ororo possesses the unique ability of weather manipulation. Psionic in nature, it allows her to cause a wide variety of meteorological phenomena at speeds far exceeding that of their natural occurences. Her common usages of this power include triggering precipitation, raising/lowering temperatures and humidity, discharging lightning from her hands, and exciting air currents to propel herself upwards in flight. However, whilst it appears that she exercises complete control over weather patterns, in reality she can only manipulate them. Altering them is impossible for her; she can only work with what naturally exists. For example, as previously stated, she can lower or raise temperatures, but not to extreme degrees such as absolute zero or solar intensities.
These meteorological events can be as localised or widespread as Ororo wills - however, the larger and more extreme the event, the more physically and psionically taxing it will be for the Wind Rider.
As with many mutants, Storm's powers are very much connected to psychology and the development of her psyche. As a child, she grew up at peace with nature, spending much of her time wandering the desert plains. It has been speculated that the surroundings and lifestyle of a mutant during puberty may have an effect on the manifestation of their super-powers; supporting this theory is the fact that Ororo forged a connection with the things nature had to offer her, allowing it to become a focal point in her upbringing and perhaps a key element in the forming of her abilities.
Skills: Ororo is a flourishing botanist and gardener. She has also been fully trained in hand-to-hand combat, and is able to pilot the X-Jet. One of her most notable talents, however, is that of leadership - she is a strong and reliable leader, one of the reasons she maintains a reputation as one of the foremost X-Men. Finally, she is an expert thief.
Personality: Ororo is essentially made up of two different beings, each of whom are easily discernable. The first is the veritable personification of 'leadership'; even before she officially became a field commander of the X-Men, she possessed the natural qualities that made her an ideal candidate for the role. Calm and level-headed, she is an able tactician and has a skill of looking upon problems with an objective and analytical eye; she also has a great love and/or respect for each of her teammates, a connection that results in her ensuring their safety to the best of her ability at all times. She would only tolerate the sacrifice of a team member in the most desperate of situations.
The second aspect of her unique persona is the 'motherly' nature that seeps into almost everything she does. Easygoing and trustworthy, she has developed close friendships with the X-Men and often provides them with much-needed advice or comfort. She is particularly fond of the younger X-Men, such as Shadowcat, but also has forged close relationships with some of the older mutants, such as Jean Grey and Wolverine. Her empathy with her fellows makes her a powerful and reliable team player within the X-Men.
However, there is a third, darker side to Ororo that is rarely glimpsed by anyone - the side plagued with anger, weakness, fear, and doubt. Her traumatic past has left her haunted by claustrophobia that can shatter her calm reserve and leave her a panicked wreck; similarly, her own rage can be unstoppable, triggering waves of power that are difficult for her to contain. Although she does not have a quick temper, she is prone to bouts of anger when she has been worn down by long periods of battle or stress; also, due to her compassionate nature, she is not hesitant to unleash her titanic fury if a teammate or friend has been harmed.
Ororo believes in the dream of Charles Xavier - she is with the X-Men out of choice, not due to any forced sense of obligation. The innate goodness within her cancels out any allegiance she may have had with Magneto and his Brotherhood, as she is firmly against the stance that any means are acceptable to meet an end.
Unfortunately, she is plagued by vicious weaknesses. Her most devastating vulnerability is a fear - more specifically, a fear of enclosed spaces, more commonly known as claustrophobia. It is an anxiety disorder that can cause symptoms ranging from shortness of breath to full-fledged panic attacks. Ororo is susceptible to both, depending on the length of her stay within the confined space in question; however, her strength of character means that she can take control of the fear for great amounts of time until she begins to show signs of worry or fatigue. Ventures into the Morlock sewers have often displayed this, as despite being under pressure, she manages to maintain her skills as a combatant.
Her second vulnerability is part of her very being - she is completely attuned to the weather, meaning that her emotions can wreak havoc if they go untamed. Bouts of rage, stress, or sorrow can set off violent, even dangerous weather phenomena. In extreme cases, she has the potential to unleash a ravaging tempest...fortunately, she mostly manages to keep a firm hold on her emotions. In the rare occurrences of strong, unbridled emotion, however, it can take much to return her to her calmer state.
History: Ororo Munroe is the daughter of David Munroe, a photo-journalist from New York, and N’Dare, a princess from a Kenyan tribe. She inherited the specialised tribe traditional blue eyes and white hair from her mother. When she was six months old, one of David’s assignments took the family from Harlem to Cairo, Egypt, where they would stay for the next several years. This was also where tragedy would strike...
When Ororo was five years old, an Israeli-Arab conflict claimed the lives of her parents and trapped her within the rubble of her home for hours. This resulted in the severe case of claustrophobia, which she still suffers from in the present. She managed to free herself and stumbled alone into town, where she was found by Achmed El-Gibar. He trained her as a thief and a pickpocket, and she became a master of the illegal trade. During her service of him, she stole from an American tourist named Charles Xavier. This man noted her mutant potential and chose to monitor her over the coming years. However, at the age of twelve, Ororo was drawn south and left Cairo.
As she wandered the plains alone, she was approached by a man who attacked and attempted to rape her. She fended him off, and accidentally impaled him on his own knife; traumatised by the incident, she swore never to take another life again. Her trek grew longer and harder, and malnourishment and fatigue threatened to end her journey more than once. She crossed the Sahara desert with ever-changing companions, none of whom truly understood her quest - the only way she could describe her journeys was as though there was a force of nature driving her body. As she grew into an adolescent, she arrived on the Serengeti Plains and her mutant powers began to manifest themselves at an alarmingly abrupt rate.
A local tribe - coincidentally, the tribe from which Ororo's mother hailed - observed her superhuman acts and took her in as their goddess. She slowly gained control over her abilities, but found that they were closely linked with her emotional state. Desperate not to injure any of her 'followers', she forced herself to become emotionally detached and seemingly uncaring. Watching from afar, Professor Xavier realised the toll that such a tormented life was having on her, particularly as she began to realise that she could not help everybody. He travelled to Africa and made contact with her; after a long discussion, she agreed to leave the tribe and follow the telepath to America. There, she became a founding member of the so-called X-Men alongside Scott Summers and Jean Grey.
Assuming the codename Storm, she overcame an initial period of discomfort as she learned more about her abilities and tamed them. She grew close to her fellow mutants at the Institute, and was eager to act on her maternal instincts and teach the children that attended the school.
She was a resident at the Institute for many years before a new era began: Logan and Rogue were recruited, and Magneto's Brotherhood made their first large-scale strike against humanity. The X-Men donned their uniforms and managed to foil the Master of Magnetism in a series of heated conflicts; Ororo herself incapacitated Sabretooth in a train station and vanquished Toad at the Statue of Liberty. She then used her wind powers to propel Logan towards Magneto, a vital element in the final confrontation and a key to the X-Men's victory.
Months later, the X-Men would face a new conflict as William Stryker attempted to use a reconstructed Cerebro to wipe out mutantkind. As his troops raided the Institute, Ororo accompanied Jean on a mission to investigate a teleporting mutant that had tried to assassinate the President. They learned that he - Kurt Wagner - had been mentally manipulated by Stryker and befriended him; Ororo, in particular, grew close to him as they flew back to America. There, the trio rendezvoused with Wolverine and the remaining X-Men, as well as their reluctant allies - former enemies Magneto and Mystique. The group launched an assault on Stryker's base, climaxing in the rescue of Xavier and the death of Ororo's friend Jean.
There was little time to rest or mourn her loss, though.
A pharmaceutical company developed a ‘cure’ for the mutant gene, a treatment used to permanently nullify abilities. This divided mutantkind, and the X-Men were forced to put aside their own feelings and step into the fray in order to once again save humanity from Magneto and his newly-formed superhuman army – a member of which was the revived Jean, who had reverted to an alternate personality calling itself the Phoenix and tapping into power on a potentially unlimited scale. After the murders of Cyclops (who was later found to be alive) and Xavier, Ororo assumed command as headmistress of the Institute and lead the X-Men into battle on Alcatraz Island. Here, the team managed to clutch success from the jaws of defeat and fend off Magneto’s forces. Unfortunately, Jean was once again struck down, this time by Logan as a mercy killing before she could hurt anyone else.
Storm took the next year to settle into her new role, and life began to return to relative normalcy…until District X, the ‘mutant capital’ of America, was decimated by the deadly Chimera Virus. Ororo and the X-Men laid down their arms and worked with the Brotherhood to cure its inhabitants and help the mutant population to recover. The process was slow and tiring, and a disheartened Ororo – weary of the constant struggles – took an indefinite leave of absence, passing down her role to Cyclops. She has been on sabbatical in Africa for the past six months, and now it is time for her to return to the Institute…
Sample Post: Riding on the shoulders of a wild, playful wind, with nature intertwining itself with the fabric of her very being, Ororo Munroe drifted seemingly aimlessly through the cloudless azure sky. Her exotic beauty was illuminated by golden sunlight, streams of warmth dappling her well-toned form as she allowed a truly contented smile to grace her rouged lips. Although she had used the funds made available to her via the Institute to book transport from Africa to New York, the stifling artificial flight had disturbed her; after months spent traversing the open plains of the Serengeti, repeating the trek she had made as a child, her claustrophobia had flared at the prospects of hours restricted to a plane cabin. As a result, she had chosen to take her leave from the vehicle at its second refuelling point.
Whilst she had found the plane and its weary passengers to be distressing, her own form of natural flight was soothing. She couldn't resist a sense of fulfilment as she flew, as though feeling her silver-ivory tresses being ruffled and caressed by the passing winds was achieving something other than attuning herself with nature. After all, amongst mutantkind, that was hardly a startling feat - although, given the choice, the Wind Rider would not exchange her abilities for any other. Her deep blue gaze wandered across the landscape below, settling on a familiar stretch of land occupied largely by an aged, wisened structure. Even the mere sight of it widened her grin, and for a single moment she was consumed by a flood of memories - from her first arrival to her departure. This revived the loss of the Chimera Virus, but she pressed it back into the depths of her mind as she descended to the front yard.
She landed lightly, and fell into a crouch. She drew her slender digits through the exquisitely emerald blades of grass, enjoying the tickling sensation that spread through her fingertips. A deep inhalation reacquanited her with a number of wonderfully comforting scents - the sweetness of the honeysuckle sprouting at the front gate, the freshly-varnished oak entrance doors, the slight remnants of chlorine that wafted from the back swimming pool. Rising to her feet, Ororo smirked triumphantly and cast her arms out to her sides. The weather responded to her muted joy with an unmatched enthusiasm, driving wisps of wind around its mistress' legs and allowing a few spatters of warm summer rain to pepper across her face. The Sun beamed ever-so-slightly brighter, giving its approval to the X-Man named Storm. Bathed in its celestial light, she felt it seep into her body.
"I'm home," she murmured softly.
