Abilities
Mutation: A transmuter, Takashi has the power to levitate, control and alter any form of glass, metal or plastic down to a molecular level, restructuring it however he sees fit using only his mind, be it by transforming lead to gold or tupperware into riot shields. While he lacks the raw strength of most telekinetics or elementals, Takashi more then makes up for it with his ability to fiddle with the details. He's unusually adept at manipulating several small pieces at once, which allows him to assemble or dismantle technological devices in a matter of seconds, such as turning your average family car into a pile of spare parts, or transforming said pile into a rail gun.
Most commonly, Takashi uses his power to create various technological devices, usually on the fly, something which his powers are exceptionally adept at. Since he can alter metal and plastic down to a molecular level, Matsuya can create much of what he needs even from the most basic of materials at hand. As such, he could build almost anything from such basic things as metal sheeting, stained glass windows and plastic tubing. Of course, big things require an equally large source to draw from, and even by decreasing the density, Taki can only stretch them so far before they collapse under their own weight. Likewise, although he can create batteries and generators, he can't actually create energy, and as such needs to either use a existing power source, or wait for one of his generators to generate the charge he needs.
However, while his preference certainly lies at the more advanced end of the spectrum, Taki is fully capable of more crude displays of power, such as transforming windows into lethal bombs of shrapnel or forming shields out of car doors. It's just not his field of expertise, and he will never be able to match men like Magneto or Hellion when it comes to raw might. And so, he chooses to fight with his head more then his muscles. Which is something he just happens to be infinitely adept at. As it turns out, Taki is gifted with a superhuman intellect, putting him well beyond anything a regular human mind could ever hope to achieve. He can calculate math faster then most computers, remember even the most minute thing in vivid detail, read faster then he can turn the pages and understand binary like most people understand English. And, perhaps most importantly, intuitively grasp and understand scientific principals that would take most professors and researchers years to even begin to understand. As a result, much of his technology is easily on par with anything found on the market, and quite a few things that aren't.
Physically, Taki is in no way, shape or form superhuman, being just as susceptible to bullets, blades, disease, fire and concrete poisoning like anybody else. And, after a rather gruesome attack, he's also lost almost all use of his legs, rendering him unable to stand or walk for more then a few moments at a time without external aid, though as Gearhead Taki dons a harness that allows him to walk and run again, at least until the batteries runs out.
Skills: Apart from his immense superhuman mind, Taki is, or was, a gifted athlete, having been a practitioner of more then one extreme sport and even a highly skilled kickboxer and skateboarder, though without his legs he isn't much good at either of those things anymore.
He's also a native speaker of both Korean and Japanese, and unless you count his liberal interspersing of Korean slang, a perfect English speaker as well.
Personality: From the day he was born, Taki always had a love for adrenaline and thrills. Be it by jumping off the roof of his house or baiting the neighborhood pit bull, he never could resist a chance for excitement. As he's gotten older, his hobby has developed into a full blown lifestyle, and by now Taki is as addicted to thrillseeking as junkies are to drugs. His entire personality reflects this, and he has a tendency to become highly extroverted, loud and excited whenever he gets a change to exercise his need for speed. Likewise, he gets quite upset whenever robbed of his chance at taunting death.
Unfortunately, Taki's recent disability has severely crippled his ability to run headlong into danger, and he has grown more introverted and insecure as a result. He is very sensitive and uncomfortable about his handicap, spending increasingly large amounts of time in his room tinkering with his inventions, a pastime he just recently discovered along with his mutation and the intelligence that came with it. Taki actually spent most of his life utterly unawares of the fact that he rivaled some of his time's greatest minds, and as such has been spared from a lot of the somewhat condescending and arrogant attitude many geniuses suffer from. Likewise, he lacks much of the articulate speech and mannerism of his peers, and few would deduce that he's anything but average. He's also somewhat unfamiliar with his own intelligence, and often fails to capitalize on it, especially in times of stress.
More recently, Taki managed to merge his love for excitement and action with his natural knack at inventing. Namely, he's decided to become a superhero, a decision that has so far managed to bring a rare element of happiness into his life. The self styled vigilante enjoys the action and excitement he gets from it, seeing it as a rare chance to get the kicks he's been missing since his accident.
He's also quite the little philanthropist, even though he's not actually aware of it himself. But even with his unusual circumstances, how many people would really decide to risk their lives for no reward, especially when they could just as easily rob banks or mass produce gold? Taki is actually a good guy, he's just don't know it yet, still so convinced he's doing it for the kicks that he fails to notice it's not only the adrenaline that makes him feel good about himself.
On a more personal basis, Taki is somewhat reclusive as of late, though he's not so much shy as comfortable in his own company. He's friendly, but understandably suspicious of people on account of his current status as mutant pariah. Most of the time he's compassionate, but rather quiet and reserved, though with some coaxing he becomes far more warm and witty, happily engaging in conversation of any kind.
He also keeps things bottled up, and it still very uncomfortable sharing either his feelings or experiences, especially when it comes to Genosha, something which he is still extremely bitter about. In particular, he levels his anger at the united States, who not only orchestrated and supported the actions that cost his parents their lives, but also got away with it without even so much as a slap on the wrist. As a result, he's extremely distrusting of any figure of authority, and rarely misses a chance to make them look bad, something which hasn't endeared Gearhead to the NYPD.
Whenever Taki dons the metal mask of his superheroic alter ego, the changes are more then merely cosmetic. The anonymity and adrenaline seems to bring out much of the old Taki, and he grows far more bold, confident and cocky whenever he becomes Gearhead.
History: Born to a Korean mother and an immigrant Japanese father, Takashi quickly proved himself to the quite the little thrillseeker. Between insane stunt attempts and frequent visits to the emergence room, Taki's managed to make a rather decent life for himself in one of the quieter parts of Seoul, even though he it became a little less so once he got there.
As he got older, Taki quickly feel in with the skateboarding extreme sport rebel crowd, more for the chance to spend time with people who shared his love for dangerous activities then any real desire to change the world. And life was pretty damn good. His parents had good incomes, he had plenty of spare time to endanger himself in, school always seemed pathetically simple and the mutant menace hadn't really reached Korea yet.
Yet the good things came to an early end, as they tend to do. A local blood drive revealed Taki as a mutant, to both the people around him and the rather surprised teenager himself. It wasn't long before the stigma, fear and anger began to boil up while he hadn't even discovered what the hell this supposed mutant ability of his was. Teachers began to accuse him of cheating, friends stopped calling, people insulted him in the halls. Throughout it all, the only people who stood by him was his parents, who both supplied him with all the support and encouragement so many like him never got. In return, they were branded as mutant lovers and treated almost as bad as Taki. Before long, the family had lost much of it's income and any place to look to for help. Just as things looked beyond repair, they found out about Genosha. It seemed the perfect place, a sanctuary against all the problems they were facing. So, the family bought themselves a house, sold their things and got on a plane to the promised land.
As it turns out, Genosha was far from the paradise it claimed to be. Not long after arriving, Taki was 'arrested' and taken from his parents to work in the Genoshan slave camps, where his powers soon emerged under the coaxing hand of his jailers. However, when they realized his uses, Taki was relocated to Genosha's military R&D department, where they put him to work developing and assembling new and improved slave collars and weaponry, all under strict supervision and the threat of killing his parents.
Calling it hell would be an insult to fierce pits of torture everywhere. Between scientists torn between hate for his genes and hates for his genius and guards who seemed to spend more time beating on the prisoners then anything, Taki faced the kind of grueling treatment that would make the most sadistic of warden proud. The only light seemed to be a doctor by the name of Daniel O Neill, who treated the young man with respect and kindness, often helping rather then merely snarling off an insult whenever he laid eyes upon him.
Meanwhile, Taki's parents were planning a rather elaborate escape attempt. Using connections, money and a little brute force, they managed to break into the facility and reach Taki, an escape route planned and cleared. But, just as Taki dared to hope for freedom, he was shoot down. Literally, as the man he had come to think of as a friend brutally gunned down both him and his parents, only to mere minutes later dig the bullet out of the mutant's spine, leaving him permanently unable to walk for more then a few seconds at a time.
Days later, Daniel acted like nothing was wrong, back to his friendly banter and carefree spirit. Taki, on the other hand, was busy planning both his escape and his revenge. Mere days before the X-men's spectacular arrival, Taki put his plan into motion. Using bits and pieces he had hidden away for weeks, he built himself a device to disable the collar that kept his powers in check. With his abilities released and anger fueling his every move, he made his escape and left a rather fetching bomb as a goodbye gift. By the time he reached Hammer Bay, the country had already been invaded by it's silent benefactors, it's captives free to return to any other country more then willing to treat them like dirt.
For Takashi, still a minor and one with a debilitating spinal injury at that, the choice was made for him. St Simone's orphanage in Queens, New York City. It was a decent place, and the people who worked there was friendly enough, especially considering they were harboring a disable mutant refugee. Unfortunately, Taki's new schoolmates weren't quite so friendly. If it hadn't been for his handicap, which offered him some sympathy points, the hazing would most likely have been a whole lot worse. As it were, he needed only to deal with the occasional insult and nagging for him to 'do something'.
Adjusting to his new life wasn't easy though, especially for Taki, who was used to spending all his free time outside being active. Instead, he found himself sitting by the sidelines time and time again, something which frustrated him to no ends. But as it turns out, necessity really is the mother of invention, and soon Taki began creating an endless stream of devices, mostly to keep himself sane and entertained. But when out testing a replica of a jet powered glider he'd seen on TV, the mutant found himself the witness to a rather violent bank robbery gone wrong. Feeling some remnant of his old, danger loving self welling up inside, Taki decided to get involved. After making himself a mask, the mutant swooped in to save the day, which he surprisingly managed to do quite well, thanks to some quick thinking and high-tech weaponry.
Returning to his room, Taki felt better then he had for months, having gotten himself a taste of the adrenaline rush he had so loved back in Korea. So, without any real thought, Takashi decided to become a vigilante like a select few other superpowered individuals in the big city. Dubbing himself Gearhead, he designed himself a costume, albeit one without tights, built himself some new toys and sought out to save the world and get some serious kicks while doing it.
So far, his attempts have been meet with limited success, thanks in large part due to the fact that his equipment and even appearance changes so radically from day to day that his latest exploits have been attributed to yet another newcomer more then once. But at least he's been able to scrounge up enough cash to buy himself a decrepit old warehouse to act as his secret little hideout. Which is awesome.
