Abilities
Mutation: Psylocke is a powerful, category three telepath, and possesses various telepathic abilities. They enable her to read minds, communicate mentally with others over long distances, stun the minds of others with “mental bolts,” control the minds of others, and create illusions in the minds of others. When using her powers, a pink butterfly-like energy aura will appear around her face. This ‘butterfly’ is also the form Psylocke chooses when manifesting an astral form, instead of the usual illusionary duplicate of her physical body.
Psylocke is also able to focus the sum totality of her telepathic power into a psychic ‘bomb’ or ‘grenade,’ which enables her to affect an enemy without the need to be right beside them. By firing up all her enemy’s synapses all at once, Psylocke can induce massive pain in her enemy, as well as force them to temporarily drop their psychic shields. The psychic grenade infuses any victim it strikes with an enormous surge of telepathic energy, temporarily disabling any form of conscious thought or motion in a wave of pain and paralysis. It's also useful as a focus for specific telepathic abilities, allowing Betsy to “cut through” interference, psychic barriers or blocks to probe or manipulate minds that were difficult to grasp normally. In addition, Betsy’s psychic grenade has a level of physical effect as well, knocking back those she targets them with. At full strength, Psylocke's psionic bomb can pierce metal, although its use is highly tiring.
Along with her telepathic abilities, Psylocke also possesses precognitive powers that occasionally allow her to see into the future. However, these flashes are more often then not random and infrequent, most often coming to her in her sleep, and are difficult and confusing for her to decipher.
Weaknesses: Despite her impressive psionic abilities, Psylocke is still only human. She is still able to be killed as easily as any mortal. This means that poisons, fire, bullets, decapitation, and the like still affect her. Also, while her telepathic and combat training is impressive, there are those who are capable of overpowering Psylocke mentally. While this group is somewhat miniscule, they possess an advantage over her psychically. Although her mental abilities are considered very powerful, an incredibly well-shielded mind is able to keep her out. Such a mind usually belongs to either one of the group of telepaths stronger than Psylocke, or to a mutant whose mutation gives them a natural resilience against mental intrusion.
Skills: Psylocke is a master of several forms of combat, such as kung fu and ninjutsu. Her fighting skills and techniques far surpass those of an average combatant. Psylocke also had additional extensive training for her physical skills in the Danger Room, thus enhancing her agility and dexterity to peak human levels. P has also undergone extensive weapons training and is extremely proficient in the use of bladed weapons such as knives, swords, and the katana. Psylocke is at the peak human strength, which makes her able to lift twice her own body weight (above 300 lbs.), and she also possess an enhanced constitution which helps her to heal and recover quickly from bodily injury. This is not something caused by her mutation however. It is simply a sign of her excellent health and physical condition.
As a part of her STRIKE training, Psylocke developed what is called total recall. This is the ability to recall images, sounds, or objects in memory with great accuracy and in seemingly unlimited volume. In other words Psylocke only has to read something once and she can remember it practically word for word. Same goes for pictures, faces, things said, even combat stances and moves. It is for this reason that Psylocke was able to master so many forms of combat is such short time; she was able to memorize combat forms almost instantly. She also received intensive training in espionage and security infiltration.
Having been a successful model for many years, Psylocke has obtained a general knowledge of different cultures, skills in presentation and fashion, how to mingle with people of great importance/famous people/wealthy people/aristocrats, and most importantly, she has the art of elegance. Due to her telepathic and martial arts training, Psylocke has developed a gift in being able to read her opponents’ movements seconds before they make them, giving her the opportunity to counter-attack faster. She can also create telepathic illusions to distract her enemies while fighting them. No doubt also due to her total recall, Psylocke is fluent in various languages due to her telepathic abilities and eidetic memory. She is completely fluent in English and Japanese.
Personality: Strong – Betsy is an extremely strong woman, both physically and mentally. She gets the job done and does not let her personal life interfere with her missions. She has a tough exterior, but to her friends she is great company, and very loyal and warm. She likes to stay on edge and rarely relaxes while in the company of strangers. It is only when she is alone, that Betsy truly reveals her true herself. She is strong physically, mentally and spiritually. She hides her emotions well before others, and tries not to let menial things get to her. While being emotionally and mentally strong, Betsy has proven herself also to be physically strong, working for STRIKE and keeping herself in wonderful shape while with the X-Men.
Perfectionist – Although most wouldn’t guess this about her, Betsy is in many ways a perfectionist. She detests having disorder around her and she prefers for things to go as planned. She won’t give up on whatever goal unless she achieves perfection. Betsy also doesn’t like leaving things unfinished or unsaid. If she has to pause in whatever she is doing, she tends to get very frustrated, even angry. Among other things, Betsy is also extremely stubborn. She will not quit at something until she get her way. Period. Luckily enough she is also patient enough to keep trying no matter how many times she fails.
Patient – Betsy is a very patient person. She usually takes mistakes in stride, and can tolerate and weather most problems with a calm endurance that most find almost infinite. Because of this, Betsy is very good with children and often serves as a mediator of sorts when dealing with difficult issues, most often stepping in to sooth tempers, calm fears and end quarrels. Because of this, Betsy is also often called upon by fellow X-Men members to discuss school or team business, if only to gain an outside perspective on a matter, which Betsy is always happy to provide.
Determined – A thrill-seeker by nature, Betsy has a ruthless sense of adventure and lives for the passion of a good fight. While she is tempered and patient when the situation calls for it, she tends to be restless when not working on projects and will often conspire to seek out (or create) action when there otherwise is none. She is quite aware of her beauty and not in the least bit above flaunting it, particularly if she believes that doing so will get her something she wants.
Sultry – It’s no secret that Betsy is a beautiful woman, born with the face of an angel and a body of sin. Nor is it too surprising that she can easily attract members of the opposite sex. However, Betsy goes beyond just having good looks. A professionally trained model, Betsy has a way to captivate and enthrall. She is in essence, hypnotizing in her attitude. Seductive and alluring, Betsy is a woman who tends to know who or what she wants in a man, and is not above flirting with someone that could be considered ‘taken.’
History: Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock was born in London England on May 12, 1980. She was the third child of Dr. James Braddock, his wife, Elisabeth. Next to her twin brother, Brian, there is also Jamie, who is a few years older than the two - and happened to be a racing driver. While growing up in a family which provided every comfort the children could ever need – the Braddock children had a fairly natural childhood. However, tragedy and trial were not lagging far behind. Sadly, Dr. and Mrs. Braddock were killed in an explosion in Dr. Braddock's laboratory at Braddock Manor - which was caused by the malfunctioning computer Mastermind (not to be confused with the mutant).
It was in the midst of dealing with this grief, that Betsy began to develop and discover her true abilities as a mutant. Her brother Brian, while having developed an ability to fly - took a job at an organization called STRIKE - a British division of the international law enforcement agency STRIKE. He enlisted Betsy to also join, knowing it would be a good position for both of them to hold - allowing them to use their powers to try and help. While working for STRIKE - Betsy also developed a highly successful career as a fashion model, living a two part life; one public and another secretive - the two siblings took up residence back in Braddock Manor, unwilling to give up the house their parents had raised them in.
One of her new assignments was to infiltrate and investigate the Hellfire Club - and, since her father was a well known member of the Club’s London branch - Betsy had no difficulties getting invited to the parties of Sebastian Shaw and his followers. She chose to do this alone. And without knowing it, Betsy was in way over her head; which is why Brian, who was planted in the Club as another spy, endangered his own cover to make Betsy leave the Club before she had a chance to fall prey to the Inner Circle’s manipulations. While disheartened at this 'failed mission' on her part - Betsy began to investigate this why it was Brian did this... and her 'snooping' led her to a 'Professor Charles Xavier', who resided in America. Intrigued, Betsy continued to dig up more and more information on him - finding this whole 'school' and struggle for mutant rights somewhat fascinating.
As more years passed - Betsy continued her modeling career and secretly served the psi-division of STRIKE. But a fatal mistake would result in Brian and Betsy leaving the organization. On yet another mission - Betsy was assigned to assassinate a fairly respected member of the government. But upon arriving at the foreclosed scene, Betsy found this particular government official heavily guarded, and not alone as he was supposed to be. Wanting to complete her mission - Betsy attempted to ambush the group alone. The purple-haired assassin fought extremely hard, but her efforts were not enough, as the number of protecting government agents was great. She took a rather bad beating, and was later recovered and saved by her brother Brian. Returning to STRIKE both Braddock children were disciplined and turned away from the organization - due to the fact that Betsy had failed, their cover had been blown, and STRIKE was now in danger.
While uninvolved with any organization now - Betsy made a slow recovery, and now had nothing but her modeling career… and the information she had gathered on one Charles Xavier. And it was then that Betsy finally approached Brian - confronting him about the incident at the Hellfire Club and asking him what Charles Xavier was to him. Brian explained reluctantly what he had come to know briefly about Charles Xavier and a small team called the X-Men. Charles had contacted Brian, calling him out on his mutant abilities, and asking him to infiltrate the club with Betsy for her own safety, and for his own need of information. While Brian had done so, he admitted to Betsy that he wasn't exactly proud of relaying what information he'd found back to Xavier... however, he would not voice the specific reason as to why to his sister. Betsy attempted to enlighten Brian on what SHE had found out about Xavier, and tried to persuade him to go with her to America. Perhaps meet Charles Xavier. Sadly this exciting idea was only Betsy's, and Brian did not wish to leave England for America. They had their own battles and he preferred to stay.
Feeling at the time that she could not abandon her brother (especially since getting them kicked out of STRIKE was HER fault) - Betsy stayed in England, continuing to model. The adventurous side of her, however, began looking for a part-time job. What she found was piloting, which began to interest the purple-haired beauty. Taking multiple lessons and training for hours on end when not in a photo shoot - Betsy became a Charter-Pilot. And was damn good at it. Slowly but surely, Betsy began to leave behind her modeling career, preferring to leave while she was still high and on the popular end of the media.
But now 27, and a fairly respected Charter-Pilot, ex-Model and ex-STRIKE agent... Betsy found the thoughts of America and this ‘Charles Xavier’ would not settle in her mind. She had to know. She wanted to know. Announcing to Brian that she would be leaving and flying to America to investigate the mutant conditions there - her news was met with some hostility. Brian did not want to risk loosing his sister as they had lost their parents. He wanted her here, where he could help protect her. He told Betsy about the recent mutant war that happened on Alcatraz Island, and that the X-Men were involved. Still, this was not enough to dishearten Betsy. Something deep within the back of her mind was pushing her. This was the right choice.
Making her farewells, Betsy Braddock left England, and flew course to America, New York. Since arriving, the purple-haired vixen has kept herself a bit under-wraps; at least, not bouncing around announcing her presence as a mutant. She's taken a few odd modeling jobs in New York, which proved easy to do, since her reputation in England had carried overseas. Setting herself up in a fairly high-rise apartment and settling herself into a more 'American' lifestyle, Betsy was determined to set out and find this school. Charles Xavier. And ultimately, the X-Men…
Shortly upon her arrival Betsy came to know a handsome young mutant businessman that went by the name of Manuel de la Rocha. Little did Betsey know that Manuel was the high-powered Brotherhood member known as Empath. After a lustful tryst that followed the two having dinner one night, the two began seeing one another, even after Betsey became a member of the Xavier School staff, and were soon engaged. In the meantime, shortly after arriving at the school, Betsey had met a man she would come to know as Scott Summers. A former teacher and leader of the X-Men, the two felt an immediate connection. After spending a night out, the two ended up sleeping together one night, this liaison causing Elizabeth to become pregnant. Not knowing who the father was and learning of Manuel’s dark and shady past, in the end Betsey decided to break it off with both men, her main concern now being the fate of her unborn child, her main issue being whether to keep it or not.
In the end this was decided for her, when one night, after reaching her second month of pregnancy, Betsy suffered from a miscarriage. Calling out to Scott in a moment of desperation, Betsy was taken to the med lab, but unfortunately it was too late, and Betsy lost the baby. After the miscarriage things remained tense among the two mutant heroes, and even after co-leading the District X group during the Decimation Revolt, the two have not come to terms on what to do about their relationship, having once again taken to avoiding one another.
