Mutation: Logan – Wolverine – is the classic and purest example of what the scientific community is beginning to call the ‘feral’ mutant. Every aspect of Logan’s mutation is geared to one thing – survival.
He has uncharted regenerative powers, able to heal a scratch in the blink of an eye and the loss of an eye in a few months. Organs, nerves, muscle and (once upon a time) bones could all be regenerated though it’s presumed that if Logan’s head were destroyed he would – finally – die. This also means he’s immune to illness, poisons and age. He doesn’t know for sure how old he really is and no one knows how long he will live.
Beyond Logan’s physical endurance are his enhanced senses; sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste are well beyond any human norm. He can recognize people by scent and track like a blood hound. He can hear in ranges both below and above human and see in the dark like a cat. Because of this, he dislikes too much noise, strong chemical scents (especially anything that reminds him of the Weapon X facilities) or the sorts of flashing lights used in clubs (or by scientists attempting to trigger seizures).
Along with enhanced senses and a near indestructible body, Logan’s strength, reflexes and endurance are greatly enhanced as well. He’s inhumanly strong, swift and deadly.
However, nature didn’t stop there. Logan is a predator and he has a predator’s weapons: three ‘claws’ buried beneath the flesh of his forearms that can spring out between his knuckles. They’re a normal part of his body – though Logan initially thought that Weapon X somehow implanted them – and were once simple bone. Like any other beast, Logan uses them with reflexive ease as well as decades of experience. Incidentally, Logan’s canines, upper and lower, are also somewhat exaggerated and sharp; he has a mean bite, when he cares to use it.
Logan’s natural mutations; speed, strength, senses and natural weaponry made him an ideal killing machine and about 30 years ago, an ambitious government operative named Stryker realized that. The Weapon X program kidnapped Logan and took him to their facility in Alkali Lake. There, they used drugs, sensory deprivation, rudimentary telepathic controls and other ‘harsh’ techniques to break Logan’s mind so they could re-train him to be their perfect soldier. They also used a technique that would best be described as vivisection to bond adamantium – a super dense, near indestructible man-made metal (originally created by Magneto) – to his bones and claws. The addition of adamantium made Logan essentially un-killable; his bones and claws are unbreakable. His adamantium claws are capable of cutting through almost everything; steel, rock, flesh. Unfortunately, adamantium is a ferrous materiel and that makes Logan one giant toy for people like Magneto. There is also a rare, unstable metal called carbonium that acts as a specific poison for Logan; it shuts down his regeneration ability as well as acting like a hemo-toxin.
Logan is not, consciously, resistant to telepathy or empathy but between his damaged mind and some fiddling that Xavier did to help him, Logan’s thoughts are very difficult to read. He’s emotionally volatile and empaths can find him distressing to be around and inducing strong emotions in him can result in unpredictable actions.
The major disadvantage to his abilities is that, basically, he can do little besides find things and kill them.
Skills: Logan has lost much of his past and what he’s gained over the past few decades focus mainly on killing.
He’s a deadly, superbly skilled fighter, capable of handling everything from tanks to rocket launchers to magazines. His premier skills though, are as a hand-to-hand fighter, fearless and enthusiastic (dare we say berserk?), he’ll wade into a battle without hesitation. He’s a good tactician but a lousy strategist. If you need someone beaten up or killed, Logan’s the man to go to.
Beyond that? Well, Logan can hunt, he can repair cars and do handy-man work. He’s a perfect survivor, able to manage the wilderness or the wild city. He’s literate but not well educated, as far as he knows, he never went to college and perhaps not to school at all. He can labor all day digging ditches (which he’s done), or hunting down political targets. He speaks fragments of several languages; German, Russian, French and Japanese but reads only English. The intricacies of molecular science, physics, Shakespeare and computer technology are beyond him – and uninteresting as far as he’s concerned. He reads a lot, mostly because he doesn’t sleep as much as most people, but reads whatever is around rather than seek out particular subjects. Lately, he’s been reading whatever’s in Xavier’s library which has expanded his literary knowledge a bit.
His social skills are rudimentary at best.
Personality: Logan is … difficult. Even his friends find him difficult and most everyone else finds him somewhere between terrifying and irritating. Logan sometimes finds himself rather terrifying and irritating.
Logan was badly damaged by Weapon X and it shows; he has many of the classic signs of PSD – sleep problems, flashbacks, memory problems, nightmares, trust issues and so on. Over the years, he’s managed to get by, mostly by living an extremely solitary life. His encounter with Marie was the first time he’d made any attempt to re-connect with other people emotionally, as far as he remembers.
He’s gruff, rude, short-tempered, easily irritated and prone to violence. Logan smokes, drinks and screws around. He likes what he likes and isn’t ashamed of it – and when he doesn’t like something he’ll be sure to let you know. He’s also unexpectedly trustworthy, loyal and, once he gives it, keeps his promises. He has strong protective instincts and despises bullies. He’s intensely vivid, emotionally speaking, and passionate in hatred and love, both.
Logan’s loyalties are personal, he doesn’t care about politics, strategy or the ‘long view’.
History: Logan’s memories begin 30 years ago, in the snow. Naked and bloody, he woke somewhere in the wilds of Canada and, more than half-mad, he lived like a wild animal for several years before regaining some semblance of a human mind. He lived, for a time, with a parks ranger and re-learned things like speech and how to tie his shoes – and the benefit of wearing shoes.
After that, his life changed – though whether it was better is open to question. Prone to nightmares, flashbacks and unreasoning outbursts of rage and terror, Logan drifted through rural Canada working the pipes, doing handyman labor and brawling for cash. He was as content as he ever expected, driving off any friendly hand with snarling hostility. Then he found a girl in his truck.
Marie woke his protective streak and Ororo pushed him to ‘chose a side’, and so he stood with the X-men when they faced down Magneto for the first time in the Statue of Liberty. There, the unkillable man nearly died. There was well, the seeds of change were sown.
The X-men were called forth again, when their home was attacked and many of the children kidnapped by a secret branch of the US military – and an enemy from Logan’s unremembered years. Stryker drew Logan to him with promises of information but his plan was for the total eradication of all mutants, everywhere. However, his plans went awry when the X-men and the Brotherhood (with an escaped Magneto at its head), attacked his base at Alkali Lake, rescued the children and destroyed his dark Cerebro. Logan left Stryker to die, content to let his sleeping memories lie in his dark subconscious.
The revelation of the Cure rocked the world – both mutant and human – but what rocked Logan’s world was the return of Jean Gray and the disappearance of Scott Summers. Changed by her death and resurrection, Logan discovered secrets Charles had kept from him. Angry at what he saw as manipulation and mind-control, Logan freed Jean from her induced coma but refused her (desperately tempting) advances. She threw him aside, literally, and escaped. Fearful of what she could to, if free, Charles and several X-men followed her with the intention of bringing her back to the mansion for treatment. However, Magneto had his own means of information and he saw Jean as a weapon. In the battle over her loyalties, Charles Xavier was killed and Jean joined Magneto’s side. That choice left the X-men battling former friends and Logan was forced to kill a woman he’d loved, rather than see her bring the world down around their ears.
Logan chose to remain at the mansion, seeing the need, and help Ororo rebuild both the school and the X-men, for Scott Summers remained missing. But they were allowed little time before the mansion was attacked again – by giant robots. Again, a secret branch of the US government was scheming to eradicate mutants and again, the X-men and the Brotherhood allied to fight them. As usual, that alliance lasted no longer than the crisis that had brought them together. Later still dark rumors from the supposed paradise on the island of Genosha resulted in the discovery of mutant slave camps. Rescue efforts brought new mutants to the mansion, many struggling with the aftermath of brainwashing and abuse.
Then the Decimation began. Illness struck the mutants in District X and violence was kindled by fear and hatred. While the X-men struggled to find a cure for the disease, they also had to fight the Brotherhood who had arrived in the slum to protect the suffering mutants there. Though a cure was found, it was not without cost for many mutants had already succumbed to the disease. Logan feared, looking on his friends that he might end up a sole survivor, outliving all his friends and all the ties to his heart that he has so un-willingly allowed.
For now, the X-me have retreated to their home, grieving for their dead and licking their wounds.
