Mark’s ability allows him to control music in order to create various outcomes and powers manifestations. The power he transmits depends on the music he listens to. The most notable examples would involve rock music. Whilst listening to music of this genre DJ can generate powerful blasts from his hands and emit the force unto other objects. These blasts have shown that his powers reach approximately 200 feet from the man himself, and can destroy boulders, cars, walls, etc.
Music of the classical nature allows him to create impenetrable force fields of which can withstand great force and impact. Dance or techno music allows DJ the power to create blinding lights. As he continues to grow, he hones his skills. It is best that during battle he stick to those genres he has become accustomed to, and those with which he knows the outcome.
The entire basis of Mark’s mutation however, relies upon physically hearing music. Therefore, for his powers to be used, he must always be able to hear and listen to music. One will never find the blue-eyed gentleman without his advanced-iPod and headphones. With his current voice activated iPod he can summon a specific genre of music with a simple word or phrase. Unfortunately, he must be careful. He is prone to both electrokinetic and telepathic invasions. Also, he can only summon one ability at a time. DJ must always attempt to make the proper and best decision. Having worked most with rock, classical, and techno music, he has become incredibly controlled and skilled in using these three. In battle, he mostly sticks to these, in an effort to prevent any unexpected surprise manifestations.
The exact extent to which his powers may manifest is unknown, and as he continues to experiment with different genres new powers develop. Most recently he has discovered that through listened to pop and teen pop music he has accelerated speed. Being that the discovery is still fresh, the pace of his movement varies and his control is lacking. Ever evolving, the young man must always remain alert and prepared.

Personality:
Life of a musician usually consisted of three things: sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll. Fortunately for Mark though, this wasn’t the way he lived his life. Yes, he played instruments and he sang, but he certainly wasn’t about the basis of rock ‘n’ roll life. He preferred close, monogamous relationships. One night stands were trashy in his opinion and he refused to be a part of such activity. Therefore, he played his music, he taught his classes, and when he met a woman, his first thought wasn’t about having sex with her.
Many of the men found it odd, but DJ simply found the act to be too sacred to share with simply anyone and treated with little care. His parents had raised him better than that, and with their deaths, he had promised that he would uphold the standards they had laid out for him. He is painfully loyal to the few friends he allows himself to have. He had this unfortunate habit of feeling that if he let himself get close to people, he would only hurt them in the end, or that they, like his parents, would leave him; be that through death or abandonment.
His self-esteem is rather low, a consequence of the life of being shuffled from place to place as a late teenager. His work at Xavier’s had helped raise his esteem slightly, but it was nowhere near the point of true confidence. He’d be continuing to work on that, in hopes of eventually being sure of himself. Sure, he appeared to his classes as having everything together, but inside, when it came to anything aside from music, he was a likely mess.
He could be goofy and funny when he allowed himself the opportunity to let loose. Sheppard was quirky, that would be the best way to describe him. His personality was a likable enough one, though he remained rather reserved. Mark’s reservation though, made him an ideal listener. Hating to discuss his own life, he was more than happy to listen to others vent about theirs. He heard some of the silliest stories and some of the most heart wrenching, but he just sat, silent and understanding. He’d place an occasional hand on their shoulder or atop their own hand. It was a small gesture, but it was appreciated by most.

Skills:
- Music - An obvious given for a mutant with music based powers, this is more in the sense of singing and performing. While Mark’s abilities require him to be listening to music, playing that music has a completely different effect. Well-versed in guitar, drums, saxophone, and piano, the concentration required for each does not allow for his mutation to take hold. Singing is simply an outlet and a comfort for DJ. When playing he prefers the like of Death Cab for Cutie and Dashboard Confessional, emotionally driven artists. Yes, he’s emo and proud of it.
- Understanding - Being that he’s relied upon his listening skills to aid his mutation, Mark is more than happy to listen to those in times of crisis, or just with the need to vent.
- Tact - Choosing which ability to use at the proper time has given Mark advanced tactical skills which aid him in missions, and allows him to help his teammates.

History:
Growing up in Boston, life for Mark Sheppard consisted of two things: music and the Red Sox. While his own personal interest in the sport was insignificant, he would go to games and just enjoy seeing his father so happy. He’d root on Mo Vaughn and Roger Clemens, and his favorite player as a child was Nomar Garciaparra. The trading of said player only caused his interest to wane further, but for his father’s sake, he remained loyal. He played little league and continued into Babe Ruth, but his heart was never 100% dedicated to the sport, and his father seemed to be completely flabbergasted at the realization. Sure he was a good player, but he never gave it his all. Knowing it was unfair to his teammates that he be so lackadaisical, Mark quit. His father simply didn’t understand how his son couldn’t be totally enthralled with athletics, as he had been as a kid. His resentment lasted for years, until he was diagnosed with lung cancer when Mark was just 14. Enlightened to the fact that every day could be his last, he moved past his disappointment and instead appreciated the music his son had grown to love.
Throughout his childhood he’d heard his mother singing along with the radio while cleaning the house and baking. Naturally, with the majority of his time spent with her, music became a part of him. He related to it, and seeing the joy it brought not only his mother, but everyone, was refreshing. Baseball had a tendency to irritate his father, specifically during the playoffs. He had fortunately missed the initial Bill Buckner incident, but every time the name was mentioned his father would tense up. It was a sore subject, and one Mark avoided like the plague.
Nearly a year after his father’s diagnosis, a horrible car accident took his mother’s life. The guilt Mark felt had been immense as she had been on her way to retrieve him from a guitar lesson across town. A man had run a red light, taking his beautiful mother from both he and his father. The fifteen year old had the heartbreaking duty of telling his father the news he knew would devastating. His father’s condition had deteriorated over the last year, and this announcement could be enough to send him over the edge. His father had broken down when he found out that his beloved’s life had been stripped.
It was mere months after this that Mr. Sheppard succumbed to his cancer, leaving a fifteen year old Mark parentless. It was at this time that the boy was placed within the system. Bouncing from house to house, his only saving grace came from his music. Frustrated with his situation, it was on the boy’s sixteenth birthday that his powers first manifested.
Being sixteen and parentless was bad enough, but on one’s birthday the pain was multiplied tenfold. Having been given a hand-me-down walkman from a classmate, Welcome to the Jungle blared through his eardrums. Nightfall had taken Boston to bed, and the streets weren’t exactly the safest place to be. Hearing faint footsteps behind him, his pace increased, more by the second until he was in a full blown sprint. Feeling a hit from behind, the brunette was knocked to the ground. As he turned over to face the man, he raised his hands in defense as the chorus kicked in. As Axl Rose belted it out, the attacker was sent flying back, crashing into a dumpster along the way. Mark stared at his hands in disbelief. Quickly, he jumped to his feet, running with a destination unbeknownst to himself.
Running through the streets, he found himself growing more tired by the moment. Feeling drowsy, the young boy fell into a slumber beneath a large and lush tree. Awaking the next morning he looked ahead to find himself at the gates of Xavier’s School for the Gifted. He immediately wondered what the term gifted truly meant, and taking matters into his own hands, walking towards the entrance. There he was greeted by a woman named Ororo Munroe. From that moment, he knew that what had happened in the alley was not a miracle, but rather an extreme gift.
He spent the next two years at the school, learning in an educational setting, and also honing his skills. His love for music would never die, and upon completion of the high school courses offered at Xavier’s, he ventured out slightly and began taking college courses. Intent on gaining a degree in fine arts, more specifically music education, Mark worked hard and kept focus. The man, now aged 21 years old was thrilled when college graduation beckoned and his degree was bestowed upon him. Moving back into just the second place he had ever called home, Sheppard began teaching the students the finer points of music; opening up their eyes to spectrums beyond that of the ever popular rap and rock that had invaded the world. From Beethoven to Tchaikovsky, he wanted nothing more than for the students to appreciate music as much as he did. He was aware though, the due to the nature of his powers, it was unlikely anyone’s love would quite measure up.
Things for the young man were moving along smoothly, his students responded well to him, he was certainly enjoying himself, and then it happened: The Chimera virus.
The outbreak had caused insanity throughout mutant and human communities alike. Mark had felt helpless in this time; he wasn’t along for the trip to District X, the hub of the infection. He did however accompany the group that ventured to Worthington Labs in search of a cure to the horrible disease that was creating such chaos. The whole experience had opened the musically inclined mutant’s eyes to the tremendous horrors that the world offered.
In the months following the resolution of the outbreak, things at the mansion were meant to flow normally. Anyone who lived in the real world knew though…nothing was normal. Hell, they weren’t normal. It wasn’t a bad thing, they held gifts that one should be able to be proud of, but so many were ashamed and frightened. With the way 95% of humans treated them, it was no wonder. Classes resumed, new students filed in, and life was once again beginning to follow a distinct and repetitious cycle. It was comfortable though, and Mark couldn’t be unhappy about the situation. After all, the alternative had been mutant extinction. And the alternative was something Mark would never even wish to imagine.
